Running for Segowea
Header

As summer turns to fall, our minds drift to thoughts of fresh picked apples , which in turn leads us to think about pies, which of course leads us to think about the 5th Annual Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5k!

Pie!

Pie!

While May is admittedly a long way off I’ve already begun planning for the 2014 Wally Waddle (actually I started planning for it  “waaaaay laaaast Maaaaayy” sorry couldn’t resist a little camp humor!)

2013 was the most competitive waddle yet.

2013 was the most competitive waddle yet.

The 2013 Waddle was a great success, even without the presence of yours truly.  I promise I’ll be there in 2014 running the show with new improvements to our ever growing event.

Focus on Moms.

The 2014 Waddle will have a new awards category, with a focus on moms.  As the Waddle is run on Mother’s Day every year, we thought it would be nice to give all those smoking fast moms out there a chance to win a special prize.   We will be giving away a free brunch at a local eatery (if you are an eatery and would like to sponsor this prize let us know!) to the Mother/Daughter and Mother/Son teams that have the fastest combined time in the 5k.

Also to help out mom  (and I suppose dad), YMCA Camp Segowea staff and alumni will be available to keep your kids busy while you run.  We will have a number of fun activities for kids ages 3+ taking place on the rugby field during the 5k race.

5 Year Awards

To celebrate our 5th year doing the Wally Waddle we will be presenting special, to be determined, awards to anyone who has finished all 5 years.  The short list of people who have done the first 4 years is:

Easton, David,
Fiege, Michael
Goran, Steven
Hodus, Jon,
Korzyk, Zach
Lange, Cheryl
Meluch, Andrew
Mittleman, Elisha

If I have left you off the list and you have finished the Waddle each of the last 4 years please let me know.

Stay tuned for more updates and have a great fall racing season!

Josh

It’s Wally Time.

After a year of eager anticipation it is finally time to waddle again.  We are just a few days away from the 4th annual Wa Wa Wally Waddle 5k. We have over 120 runners preregistered for this years race including last years second place finisher Mike Chow and last years woman winner Marisa Strange.  For the first time since the Waddle started we will have an overall winner other than Mike Insler, as he is unable to attended due to his pending nuptials.

Race Wally!

In addition to the 5k we also have 2 kids runs.  A FREE timed and scored 1 mile for kids 13 and younger (over 30 kids already signed up), and a free untimed unscored 100 yard dash for kids 9 and younger.  Both kids races take pace before the 5k, with the mile starting at 9:30 and the 100 yard dash going off at approximately 9:50.  All three races start and end on the Rugby field.

Great Course!

For details on getting to the race and race maps please see our course page.  We ask that you park in the new lot on top of the hill by Hooker Ave and walk down to the rugby field.  Vassar Security will be on hand to direct parking.  If you haven’t preregistred we encourage you to do so by 11:59 pm Friday night May 10th by visiting the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club Website https://www.mhrrc.org/MHRRCshoppingCart/RaceOrder.aspx .  There is no extra fee for using the online registration option and it will save our volunteers a lot of work if you preregister.  It will also save you $5 ($7 if you are a MHRRC member) off the cost of race day registration.

Camp Alumni Makes Race Debut

Great article in the Poughkeepsie Journal today about Peter Van Aken a Camp Segowea alumni from the 1960’s who ran his first road race and reconnected with camp at the same time.  http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20120524/SPORTS06/305240027/On-Run-new-runner-born-from-unlikely-place

Wally Waddle Was Wonderful

May 14th, 2012 | Posted by joshua in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

I need to start by thanking all the amazing people who helped make this years Wa Wa Wally Waddle a truly smashing success.  To the pie makers and timers,  runners and spectators, fundraisers and sponsors, big kids and little kids, first time waddlers and long time road racers I could not do any of this without you.  You have helped grow the Waddle into the incredible success that it is today, thank you.

With your help we raised over $4000 to help send kids from the Mid-Hudson Valley to YMCA Camp Segowea. I encourage you to visit the Camp Segowea website to learn more about our camp and to consider sending your child there for a life enriching experience they will never forget.

As Waddle tradition dictates ,home-made pies were given out as prizes to the overall and age group winners.  Our Segowea Alumni baked over 20 pies and those not given out as prizes were given away during the post award free pie raffle.  10 lucky raffle winners went home with home-baked pies!  Lana of Bella Cakes made turtle cupcakes for all the kids who ran the 100 yard dash and the mile.

Mike Insler and Marisa Strange have won the Waddle all 3 years!

Another Waddle tradition was upheld with local racing legend Marisa Strange, and out of towner Mike Insler each winning for the 3rd year in a row.  While Marisa cruised to a 40 second victory over 2nd place Female Rachel Sleeter, Mike Insler needed a course record 16:13 to hold off local stand out Mike Chow who finished just 3 seconds back.

Mile Winners Isabelle Hatch and Griffin Sarachek

The kids 1 mile (which might have been 1.1 miles) was won by 10-year-old Isabelle Hatch and 12-year-old Griffin Sarachek.  The 9 and younger age group was won by Isabelle Serrano and Achille Sarachek.

Time to sign up to run

April 27th, 2012 | Posted by joshua in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)
Returning for its third year, the Wally Waddle is fast becoming a local favorite for both its location and its awards. The Wally Waddle will be held on May 13th at Vassar Farms in Poughkeepsie, NY and is run primarily on a gently rolling dirt road. In keeping with Waddle tradition instead of medals, ribbons or trophies overall and age group 5k winners will be awarded fresh baked pies. There will also be a free pie raffle after the award ceremony with your bib number serving as your raffle number.

In addition to the 5k race, there will also be 2 free kids’ races. A 1 mile for kids 13 and younger and a 100 yard dash for kids 9 and younger which will be held 30 minutes before the start of the 5k. Last year we had over 30 kids participate in the 2 races and hope to grow that even more this year.

All of the money raised by the Waddle goes toward providing scholarships for local children to attend Camp Wa Wa. Last summer 6 area children were able to attend camp Segowea who would not otherwise been able to because of your support.

Please come out on Sunday May 13th to support the Waddle and Camp Segowea. You can run on a scenic course, compete for pies, and know you’re helping give a local child the life-changing opportunity to attend summer camp.

To register download a race flier or visit www.mhrrc.org to register online

A race day raffle will be held for a two night stay at Cold Moon Farm Bed & Breakfast in Vermont. Raffle tickets cost $5 or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at the race registration table.
